The Char Dham Railway connectivity project is an ambitious project of Government of India to construct proposed twin railway lines in the hill state of Uttarakhand. The proposed railway project will complement the Chardham Highway project by connecting the holiest places of Hinduism called Chota Chardham, from the existing Doiwala railway station near Dehradun to Gangotri and Yamunotri via a fork at Uttarkashi and another set of twin rail links from the upcoming railway station at Karnaprayag to Kedarnath and Badrinath via a fork at Saikot. The line is also of strategic military importance and has designated a national project.
The fact that the project envisages to offer safer and faster means of transport to some of the most important places in Garhwal Himalayas including the Chardham, would eventually allure a lot more people. The project is said to help the safe inflow of tourists even during the extreme climatic conditions, which can be construed as prosperous year round tourism in the state, which was otherwise restricted to the summer months.
