Narrative description of Project

  • The Char Dham Railway connectivity project is an ambitious project of Government of India to construct proposed twin railway lines in the hill state of Uttarakhand. The proposed railway project will complement the Chardham Highway project by connecting the holiest places of Hinduism called Chota Chardham, from the existing Doiwala railway station near Dehradun to Gangotri and Yamunotri via a fork at Uttarkashi and another set of twin rail links from the upcoming railway station at Karnaprayag to Kedarnath and Badrinath via a fork at Saikot. The line is also of strategic military importance and has designated a national project.

  • The fact that the project envisages to offer safer and faster means of transport to some of the most important places in Garhwal Himalayas including the Chardham, would eventually allure a lot more people. The project is said to help the safe inflow of tourists even during the extreme climatic conditions, which can be construed as prosperous year round tourism in the state, which was otherwise restricted to the summer months.

  • Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “RVNL”) has been assigned the work by the Ministry of Railway, Govt. of India for final location survey for new rail connectivity to Chardham i.e. Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Uttarakhand.

  • RVNL has entrusted Yüksel Proje (hereinafter referred to as “Yüksel/Consultant”) for preliminary design for 327 kms long single BG line Rail Connectivity to Chardham and Chardham Yatra (Gangotri, Yamunotri Badrinath and Kedarnath) in the state of Uttarakhand, India, in 2 (two) Packages.

  • Yüksel has further appointed Voyants Solutions Private Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as VSPL/Sub-consultant), as Technical Expert to provide consultancy services for carrying out Environmental Impact Assessment/ Environmental Management Plan for the aforesaid 327 km long Rail connectivity project in the state of Uttarakhand.

  • The purpose of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the proposed Chardham Rail project is to identify and evaluate the nature, magnitude and significance of the potential adverse environmental impacts arising during construction and operation of the project.

  • Railway projects may have negative impacts on physical environmental resources (topography, drainage, land, water, air etc.), ecological resources (flora and fauna) and socioeconomic (displacement, loss of livelihood etc.) and cultural resources (damage to historical/ archaeological and cultural sites) depending on the proposed alignment. In order to identify and evaluate the anticipated environmental impacts during construction and operation phase of the proposed Project, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study will be carried out and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) will be prepared.
