Samdrup Jongkhar is the district headquarters of the Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag, one of the six Dzongkhags of eastern Bhutan and has been the gateway to the six districts of eastern Bhutan. Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde was approved as a one of the four Class – A Thromde by the Parliament in August 2010. Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde stretches down from Dewathang to the India-Bhutan gateway in the south, sharing its border with the Indian state of Assam. It has an area of 4.47sq.km approximately with an elevation ranging from 200-4000 metres above the sea level.
In view of the change of Thromde definition and the changed urban milieu, preparation of LAP (local area plan) are initiated, LAP will provide basic facilities like streetlights, proper drainage and waste, parking, water connection, sewerage treatment plant in each LAP, recreational centres, parks and sport complex.
