Narrative description of Project

Even though Kerala has a good network of streams, rivers, lakes and backwaters, most of them are subjected to severe environmental threats such as drying up in summer, indiscriminate sand mining, encroachment and pollution due to dumping of wastes, industrial waste disposal into water bodies, soil erosion, water hyacinth, domestic sewage etc. The recent devastating floods of August 2018 and 2019 witnessed the severity of effect of pollution in the water bodies of the state. After the receding of the flood waters, large amount of plastics was seen to be deposited on the flood affected areas.

Recent studies by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and Centre for Water Resource Development and Management (CWRDM) have shown that all the 44 rivers in Kerala are polluted and under threat. The most polluted rivers are Karamana, Pamba, Meenachil, Periyar, Kallayi and Valapattanam rivers. The pollution abatement studies were done for Karamana and Killi rivers are under different stages of implementation.

This consultancy is proposed by Irrigation Department under National Hydrology Project to formulate a detailed project report for rejuvenation of five rivers of Kerala and preservation of the rejuvenated standards in future.
