Narrative description of Project

Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) is abound with lakes, tanks, rivers, waterways, creeks and estuaries. Due to rapid urbanization and change in land use within the CMA, the water bodies and the waterways have lost their quality and have been degraded due to misuse as dumping ground and disposal of wastewater. To revive the water bodies and to rejuvenate its eco system, the Government of Tamil Nadu had announced to restore about 214 km of waterways which includes creeks and estuaries and 42 water bodies in Chennai Metropolitan Area by desiltation, interception and diversion of sewage, scientific solid waste management, embankment protection, development of walkways for public use and other works / activities as required underthe aegis of the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT).
Chennai, situated in north-east of Tamil Nadu State has coastline, stretches to 26 km from Thiruvanmiyur in the south to Thiruvottiyur in the north with major Creeks and Estuaries likeKovalam Creek, Adyar Creek & Estuary, Cooum Estuary and Ennore Creek. As the Adyar Creek and Estuary (358 acres) have been successfully restored, CRRT has undertaken steps to restore Ennore and Kovalam Creek towards the restoration of ecology in the city.
In turn, CRRT has approached Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited(TNUIFSL) for technical assistance and identification of consultants for the same. The assignment is proposed to be taken through PDGF managed by TNUIFSL under the World Bank assisted TNSUDP project
