Narrative description of Project

Chennai watershed area is divided into 4 major water basins namely, Kosathalaiyar, Cooum, Adyar and Kovalam. The floods occurred in the past were severe along these waterways stretches of Adyar, Cooum, Kosasthalayar rivers, Buckingham Canal and also along the Pallikaranai Marshland. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared for providing Integrated Storm Water Drains in the four major basins during the year 2014. As a first stage, works have been commenced in Adyar and Cooum basins with World Bank funding under Tamil Nadu Sustainable Urban Development Project (TNSUDP). Now, GCC intends to take up the Kosasthaliayar basin for implementation. Meanwhile, the various stakeholders have taken up construction and development of waterways, storm water drains based on local needs and requirements. In addition, many of the roads has been relaid due to which the topography has changed and requires revision of the earlier prepared DPR in the year 2014.
Hence, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) requested Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) to appoint a consultant to study the present drainage system and to prepare a Revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for providing an Integrated and Comprehensive Storm Water Management facilities by integrating all the waterways, water bodies, etc., for Kosasthalaiyar Basin in GCC, through the Project Development Grant Fund (PDGF) under Tamil Nadu Sustainable Urban Development Project (TNSUDP) assisted by the World Bank managed by TNUIFSL
